The late 80’s and early 90’s were an exciting time for Boston Comedy as comedians like Steven Wright, Denis Leary and Lenny Clarke brought a unique new style to clubs. The smart yet gritty comedy found a receptive audience in Boston’s educated working class. The Boston comedy scene hit the national stage when Steven Wright was invited to sit down on the Tonight Show because Johnny Carson was so impressed with his performance. Stand-up performances were some of the hottest tickets available and the Comedy Connection located in Faneuil Hall was one of the best Boston Comedy Clubs to catch a show.
Most Boston comedy clubs were packed for six nights a week and many up-and-comers got their start opening for more well known acts. With the number of new clubs opening and people filling seats every night, it was a great time for comedians to get their foot in the door. Local legends like Lenny Clarke, Kenny Rogerson, Mike McDonald, Don Gavin, and Paula Poundstone and so many more all came out of this iconic era.
Nobody was holding back when it came to forming their own distinctive style and it helped put Boston Comedy on the map. This created a unique scene that became a melting pot of many different styles, paving the way for comedy as we know it today.
In 2008 the Comedy Connection moved from its iconic Faneuil Hall location to the Wilbur Theater in the theater district. Comedians are regularly scheduled to take the stage and keep the crowd laughing with the type of stand-up performance that made the Comedy Connection so great when Boston Comedy was first reaching a national audience.
